So the fat man from Meet the Press finally sang. What any thinking individual has known since February is now the Beltway’s conventional wisdom. It’s the end of the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton era.
So Hillary, please don’t drop out now, months ago you missed an opportunity to make a grand gesture. Even if you had stayed in and run an honorable positive campaign, that too would have been fine. But you spent millions of your own money, ruined your reputation and destroyed your husband’s legacy in an effort to take down your democratic opponent. It’s sad, and it’s especially sad because many women think you lost because you are a woman. That’s pure B.S., if you had run a positive and honorable campaign and won, your gender wouldn’t have mattered. That argument is just as ridiculous as the Rev. Wright claiming this isn’t about him, it’s about the black church.
You started out as the inevitable nominee, you locked in a ton of super delegates even before the primaries thanks to being the wife of a popular democratic president, you picked some deep pockets - even Rupert Murdoch threw a fund raiser for you. You thought you had it locked up and you didn’t run a primary campaign, you ran a general election campaign against Rudy, Mitt, and McCain. It was going to be over on Super Tuesday.
After Iowa you hit the panic button and Obama became Ken Starr in your mind. You took the low road and millions of us who had looked up to you and your husband for a decade suddenly understood what it was about the two of you that drove our republican friends and relatives nuts. You’ll literally say and do anything to win - as Don Imus is fond of repeating: “If they can’t beat you on the field, the Clintons will meet you in the parking lot, and if they don’t win there, they’ll follow you home and kick your front door in.”
Still, my hope is that you’ll stay in and simply run a positive campaign, or at least if you are going to attack, let it be an attack on the republicans and not a fellow democrat. You’ll win West Virginia and Kentucky and perhaps you can reclaim a bit of your dignity.
